EXPERT SHARES TIPS FOR BUSINESSES TO REDUCE THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION

New research by ElectricalDirect has found that the majority of UK businesses could be doing far more to cut back on their energy consumption, so it has partnered with Claire Watson, Managing Director at Airmatic, to share ways that companies can save.

Regularly maintain your lighting – 86% of businesses don’t. Businesses waste energy and money by not regularly maintaining their office lighting, as without frequent checks, light levels can fall by almost a third over a couple of years. Regular maintenance can help reduce costs by up to 15%.

Reduce the heating temperature in the office – 85% of businesses don’t. UK businesses can also save money by reducing the heating temperature in the office, and a reduction of just 1°C can cut fuel consumption by 8%.

Keep radiators clear of obstructions – 85% of businesses don’t. If items are placed in front of a radiator, this will cost your business money and energy, with the heat generated mainly warming up the obstruction, rather than the room.

Set the heating at a constant temperature – 85% of businesses don’t. Keeping the temperature at a constant level will help reduce your office energy consumption, as repeatedly moving it up and down will only increase your bills.

Make use of natural light from windows and skylights – 84% of UK businesses don’t. Using natural light rather than switching the lights on and off on a sunny day can help save money and energy in the office. By reconfiguring your office space, you can make the most of the natural light that comes in by moving workspaces to naturally well-lit locations.

ELECTRICAL TRADES: ASBESTOS AND YOU

Electricians and electrical contractors across the UK are being warned about the hidden dangers associated with asbestos.

The warning comes as part of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) Asbestos and You campaign, targeting tradespeople about the personal risks from asbestos that still exist in properties across the country today.

Around 5,000 people a year die from asbestos-related illnesses and asbestos can still be found in buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. HSE is warning that despite the ban on its use, many buildings still contain asbestos, and it is still a serious risk to anyone exposed to it at any age.

Paul Reeve, Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) Director of CSR, says, “We actively support HSE’s campaign to help get the vitally important message out that, despite being banned in the UK today, asbestos is still encountered by those who work in older domestic, public and commercial buildings.

“Electricians and other professionals can disturb materials that contain asbestos in their day-to-day work in these older properties. Examples include backboards of meter and fuse boxes, discovering asbestos when drilling stud walls, or laying cables in lofts where loose fill insulation has been used. Ensuring young, but also other, employees and contractors who work in these buildings are aware of the serious health hazards from asbestos fibres is one of the most valuable activities that anyone in our industry can undertake.”

If asbestos cannot be safely managed, it should be removed by a licensed asbestos contractor. Where present, asbestos should be closely managed by those responsible for the building.

ANSELL LIGHTING ACHIEVES A KING’S AWARD FOR ENTERPRISE

Ansell Lighting has become one of 148 organisations nationally to receive a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise and has been recognised for its excellence in the Innovation category for its patented Panel Pod product.

The Panel Pod was created in response to an identified industry need, and converts an LED panel light into an emergency light in less than 60 seconds, without needing a conversion kit or additional ceiling fixture to install. Emergency lighting is required by British law and workplace health and safety guidance, so if the lights go out in the case of a fire or other incident it stays on for up to three hours.

Since its launch in 2014 almost 400,000 Panel Pods have been sold worldwide.

The King’s Awards for Enterprise were previously known as The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, and the new name reflects His Majesty The King’s desire to continue the legacy of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s, by recognising outstanding UK businesses.

The award programme, now in its 57th year, is the most prestigious business award in the country, with successful businesses able to use the King’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.

TRADESPEOPLE REVEAL THE SEVEN MOST FRUSTRATING CUSTOMER HABITS

New research has revealed the most frustrating customer habits tradespeople have to endure whilst on the job. The research, conducted by Ultra LEDs, found that customers not being at home after arranging a job tops the list for the most frustrating customer habit.

The top seven most annoying customer habits are:

• Not being home

• Constantly asking for progress updates

• Adding on extras

• Not paying on time, or trying to bring the cost down after the work has been agreed

• Getting harassed by a pet

• Not having enough room to complete the job

• Not being offered a drink

Tom Cain, Technical Engineer at Ultra LEDs, says, “As a tradesperson, customer interaction is a key part of the job but it can also be the most frustrating. When you’re on the job, the last thing you want is for the customer to be constantly asking for updates, being barked at by a dog or turning up for them not to be home when you’ve agreed a date and time.

“If you’re having issues with your customers, it can be difficult to remain diplomatic. However, it’s important for both the business and your own personal reputation to remain professional.”

REPORT REVEALS THE UK’S MOST ECO-FOCUSED TRADES

New research from Rated People has revealed which trades are the most committed to sustainability, along with how tradespeople are going greener this year. The research is part of the 2023 edition of the Rated People Home Improvement Trends Report.

The report found that one in three (34%) UK homeowners say they’d be more likely to choose a tradesperson if they were environmentally friendly, so it’s more important than ever for tradespeople to improve their green credentials.

The research shows electricians as the most committed to sustainability, with almost nine in 10 (86%) making changes to their businesses to make them more environmentally friendly. Handypeople are second, with 78% making eco changes. Bathroom fitters (75%) take third, gardeners (71%) are in fourth place and builders (64%) take fifth position.

More than three-quarters (78%) of UK tradespeople say they will be making changes to their business and ways of working to be more environmentally friendly this year. Well over half (59%) say it’s because they care about the planet, and 42% think homeowners want businesses to be more eco-focused.

In 2023, more than half of UK tradespeople (52%) say they’ll take on more local jobs to cut down travel time and use less fuel, and four in 10 (41%) will start giving quotes remotely to reduce the amount of time they spend on the road. Tradespeople will also be improving their recycling methods, using second-hand parts where possible and will start driving electric vehicles to make their businesses more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has elected broadcaster and campaigner Nick Ross CBE as its new President. Nick will replace Sir Keith Povey, who retires as president after 14 years. His primary goal will be to continue the work of developing the relationship between the police and private security.

Highly experienced in the trade sector, Kevin has previously worked with Thomson Local, Rated People, Plentific and Checkatrade. ROLEC EV NAMED OFFICIAL CHARGING PARTNER FOR FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO REQUEST TYPE TEST CERTIFICATION?

In this article, Contactum looks at some of the compliance requirements of BS EN 61439-3 and the responsibilities manufacturers have to fulfil before certification is granted. The company shares excerpts taken directly from its Defender 2 test reports.

Within BS7671, the Wiring Regulations, Regulation 421.1.201 states that “within domestic (household)

premises, consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies must comply with BS EN 61439-3…”

Certification to BSEN 61439-3 requires a variety of tests to be performed (listed below). Certification will only be granted on successful completion of each test. These tests are onerous and designed to prove the unit is able to perform way past its normal expected operational design characteristics.

• Resistance to corrosion

• Verification of resistance of insulating materials to abnormal heat and fire due to internal electric effects

• Verification of protection against mechanical impact (IK code)

• Marking

• Degree of protection (IP code)

• Clearance and creepage distances

• Effective earth continuity between the exposed conductive parts of the assembly and the protective circuit

• Short-circuit withstand strength of the protective circuit. Conditional short-circuit test

• Incorporation of switching devices and components

• Internal electrical circuits and connections

• Terminal for external conductors

• Power frequency withstand voltage test

• Impulse withstand voltage test

• Temperature-rise tests

• Short-time withstand current test

• Short-circuit withstand strength test. 16kA test with fuse (Annex ZB)

• Dielectric verification

• Electromagnetic compatibility

• Mechanical operation

Some of the tests are more critical than others, but all are mandatory for the unit to be certificated. Below, Contactum shares some of the more arduous tests carried out, directly from its reports.

Verification of resistance of insulating materials to abnormal heat and fire due to internal electric effects

The test was performed according to BS EN 61439-3, Clause 10.2.3.2. The test specimen is conditioned for at least 24 hours at a temperature between 15ºC and 35ºC and a relative humidity between 45% and 75%. Once removed from the conditioning atmosphere, the test specimen is tested within 30 minutes.

The wrapping tissue and the wooden board to be placed underneath the test specimen are specified in 5.3 of IEC 60695-2-10. They are conditioned for a minimum of 24 hours at a temperature between 15ºC and 35ºC and a relative humidity between 45% and 75%.

The test specimen is considered to have withstood this test if there is no ignition, or if all the following situations apply:

a) The longest sustained and continuous flames or glowing of the test specimen after removal of the glow-wire extinguish within 30s

b) The specimen is not totally consumed

c) There is no ignition of the wrapping tissue

The temperatures are as follows: 960 ± 15ºC for insulating materials supporting live elements (terminal connectors); and 650 ± 10ºC for insulating materials not supporting live

Temperature-rise tests

This test was performed according to BS EN 61439-3, Clause 10.10.2.3.5.

The load distribution in the different tested panels, and the cables cross section, are shown in the table below.

When this test is performed, a load is connected to the outgoing breakers as per the table. The temperature is monitored for heat rise.

The result: we have the full rating of board without derating the outgoing circuits.

Annex ZB of BS EN 61439-3 is a verification of the Consumer Unit to withstand a 16kA fault. This is specific requirement for consumer units used within UK installations.

LITE CREATES STUNNING LIGHTING SCHEME FOR SCOTLAND’S HISTORIC STIRLING OLD BRIDGE

Stirling Old Bridge, located on the River Forth, is one of the most important crossing points in Scotland.

The present Stirling Bridge was built around the 1500s and is one of the few and best medieval masonry arch bridges in Scotland.

Electrical contractors and installer, Forth Electrical Services (FES), appointed LITE to create a new, dynamic, colour-changing design for the lighting on the bridge. LITE provided initial designs and plans and supplied the light fixtures, recommending several solutions from its portfolio of lighting brands.

LITE also carried out onsite trials with members of Historic Environments Scotland (HES) and local architects in attendance to ensure the locations of fixtures and lighting levels were correctly and sympathetically placed. The river in this section has a history of flooding, therefore the ground-mounted fittings were required to be IP68 and the main floodlighting was mounted onto columns.

Power was available on either side of the river, but LITE installed new ducting and cabling for the required locations.

Color Kinetics ColorReach Elite 100 RGBW products were selected for cross-lighting, and Studio Due Aria RGBW IP68 products were chosen for ground-mounted lighting, to create a dynamic colour-changing lighting effect, controlled remotely by a Pharos LPC1 controller.

DMX connectivity is provided via wireless technology and remote access to the controller is available via a 4G router or SIM card.

The result is an innovative and dynamic lighting solution which brings modern, colour-changing lighting to an area

steeped in rich history and traditional architecture. The modern solution also gives the end user complete control over the colour change to cast dynamic light shows and

select programmed colour displays to mark national days and occasions for the public.

MORE VEHICLE CHARGE POINTS COMING TO LEEDS’ RESIDENTIAL AREAS

Drivers of plug-in vehicles will soon find topping up their mileage even more convenient, thanks to 84 new plug-in vehicle fast charging bays being installed in Leeds.

A newly announced partnership between Leeds City Council and EB Charging will see 84 new ‘fast’ charging bays installed at 15 locations across the city – with the first 30 bays at six locations already live.

Fifty-four bays at nine more locations are due to go live by the early summer. Each of the new bays will be easily located on services such as Plugshare or Zapmap when live.

Horsforth, Rothwell and Morley are among the areas that will benefit from the new infrastructure. The council has selected the locations to help improve access to local vehicle chargers for residents living in parts of the city with limited off-street parking.

The new charge points will supply vehicles at a rate of up to 7kW, meaning that a typical electric vehicle could fully recharge in around six hours.

UNIVERSITY OF YORK APPOINTS SIEMENS TO DELIVER SOLAR FARM

The University of York has appointed Siemens to design and deliver a solar array located at the university’s new Institute for Safe Autonomy (ISA), as part of a £1.5 million research project. The project will enhance the institute’s research capabilities to develop and use AI and robotic systems to inspect and maintain solar arrays.

The 193kWp solar farm will create a ‘living lab’ to give insight to landowners and operators of solar farms on how best to integrate robotic technology in the field. The project will also enable the institute to become energy self-sufficient by 2025, generating approximately 170MWh of power annually.

The farm, which spans more than 1,400m2, will consist of a range of different panel configurations, including static ground installations and sun-tracking arrays. Solar panels will also be deployed on the side of the institute’s building and the rooftop to maximise light exposure.

Following successful completion of the design phase, installation work will be carried out on site by specialist installer, Lynx, with the project expected to be fully operational by July. Siemens, siemens.com

A beautiful and contemporary home in Suffolk is now benefitting from an intuitive lighting controls solution from Rako Controls, thanks to the expertise of Suffolk-based technology firm, Cerebrum Systems. The new lighting scheme delivers the perfect combination of smart technology and functionality for day-to-day family living.

The home needed a layered lighting design to bring a balanced cosy atmosphere. The daily routines of the family have been brought to life, with tailored lighting scenes to follow the rhythm of the day and night, as well as personalised lighting for the family’s favourite activities. The design flows throughout the house, with automation incorporated into the hallway, kitchen, lounge, and dining area. The control system offered additional benefits outside of the convenience of automation, which played a crucial role in bringing the client on board with this new technology. The lighting system offered a more energy-efficient approach, as lighting output didn’t need to be set at 100% and could vary to the degree needed depending on natural light or time of day.

An East Midlands IT and building technology firm has helped one of the most exciting office developments in the South East meet its sustainability targets by transforming existing lighting to make it high-tech and low energy.

Scenariio, based in Derby, has just completed its third smart lighting system projects at the Here + Now development, a major refurbishment of two office buildings at Thames Valley Park in Reading.

The Here + Now buildings were acquired from original owner, Microsoft, by BauMont Real Estate Capital, which has teamed up with London-based management company, V7, to create a highly sustainable campus focused on environmental, social and governance investing and wellness.

This includes making the buildings, which offer 145,000ft2 of workspace, net zero carbon – earning them the BREEAM Outstanding rating for their environmental performance – while establishing a design-led space with a range of amenities, including two cafes, a large indoor and an outdoor gym and an outdoor working area.

As part of the buildings’ general refit, Scenariio recommissioned the existing intelligent lighting system and upgraded the system’s software, replacing emergency lighting and repositioning the existing light fittings.

The company also continues to provide ongoing maintenance and support with mechanical and electrical contractor, MEP Labs.

The whole scheme comprised around 1,000 lights, each one powered via low voltage ethernet wiring and each with a sensor attached, and 23 smart engines, with the total area covered by the installation measuring 45,000ft2 Scenariio, scenariio.com

A SPIRITUAL TALE OF LIGHTING CONTRASTS

Zumtobel and its sister brand Thorn worked with Callaghan Electrical Contractors to design a new lighting scheme for the interior and exterior of the last substantial Roman Catholic cathedral in Ireland.

Completed in 1942, the Cathedral of Saint Patrick and Saint Felim is the most dominant building in Cavan Town.

Internally, it is vast and awe-inspiring, featuring 28 columns, but it was often viewed as gloomy. Ageing and soaring energy prices meant the Cathedral recently underwent a complete conservation, restoration and upgrade.

Last year, Callaghan Electrical was appointed as the electrical contractor to carry out the rewiring of the building as part of the restoration project.

The scope of essential works included replacement of the existing electrical installations throughout, fire safety installations and the integration of new technologies, whilst restoring, retaining and enhancing the integrity of the authentic historic fabric of the building.

The Zumtobel Group’s lighting brands provided a lighting solution for each location, from the ornate interior to the showstopping exterior. The lighting approach differed from subtlety on the inside to showstopping outdoors.

DRAYTON ADDS NEW MODULE TO ONLINE TRAINING ACADEMY

Located next to Develop Training’s York training centre in Huby, the artificial street consists of purpose-built houses, apartments, a café, and a confined spaces area. From here it will deliver training in emergency response to gas incidents, as well as excavation safety, cable avoidance, sewer jetting and confined space entry.

The judging panel which selected the name was made up of senior members of staff across the JTL Group, of which Develop Training is a member, and created a 10-name shortlist before finally deciding on the winning name. Training Terrace will be now used in all communications regarding the street going forwards and immortalised in the area’s signage.

ROHS AND LED LIGHTING: A BRIGHT FUTURE

The ban of halogen lamps first implemented by the European Commission in 2007 and, more recently, the announcement of RoHS2 (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) announced by the European Union and UK government have helped to bring LED lighting to the forefront as the best alternative to incandescent lighting, as these lights are sustainable and energy-efficient. The directive sets the guidance for future use of lighting products and offers huge opportunity for the growth of LED. Simon Greenwood, Sales Director, Trade and Specification, Signify UK&I, shares his view on the RoHS directive and what it means for the lighting sector.

The rise in the production and use of electrical and electronic products, such as mobile phones, computers and kitchen appliances, has resulted in an increasing volume of electrical and electronic waste. During the use, collection, treatment and disposal of such waste, products may release harmful (hazardous) substances such as lead, mercury and cadmium, which can cause major environmental and health problems. Now, RoHS is a set of restrictions imposed to preserve the environment, improve recycling possibilities and minimise the risk of substance exposure.

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations affect businesses that are involved with electrical and electronic equipment. This includes manufacturers, importers, exporters, businesses that re-brand goods and, of course, distributors. The regulations limit the use of hazardous substances in the manufacture of new electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market in the UK.

In Great Britain and in Northern Ireland, many types of electrical and electronic

equipment (EEE) are regulated to control the levels of certain hazardous substances and chemicals they contain, with the aim of protecting human and animal health.

All products in scope must:

• Have supporting technical documentation (often referred to as a technical file) to demonstrate compliance

• Have a Declaration of Conformity

• Be labelled with the required information

• Display the appropriate conformity marking for the GB and/or NI markets

What does RoSH mean for the lighting industry?

Released in February 2022, the RoHS directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. For the lighting sector in particular, the legislation regulates the use of mercury in lighting products, impacting what products are permitted on the market for installation.

For general lighting purposes, a ban on Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLni lamps) and on T5 and T8 fluorescent Tubes comes into play from February 2024

One of the most important changes introduced by RoHS2 is that it has become a CE Marking Directive, enforced under the EU’s New Legislative Framework (NLF)/the UKCA mark in the UK. This means that in order to affix the CE Marking on the EEE, the manufacturer must meet the requirements of the RoHS Directive in addition to the requirements of other applicable CE Marking Directives.

Relation between RoHS, EcoDesign and WEEE

The Ecodesign directive replaced the Energy Using Products Directive in 2009. This includes products that do not use energy but impact on energy consumption, such as insulation materials and water-using devices, as well as energy-using products. It aims to reduce the environmental impact caused during the manufacture, use and disposal of a very wide range of products.

Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is related to the

design, use and recycling of electrical and electronics equipment or components. WEEE is a directive explaining how to use, operate and recycle electrical and electronic equipment or components. RoHS on the other hand, is related to limited use of hazardous products in electrical and electronics equipment or components. RoHS compliance should also follow WEEE compliance.

RoHS compliance dovetails into WEEE by reducing the amount of hazardous chemicals used in electronics manufacture.

Put another way, RoHS regulates the hazardous substances used in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, while WEEE regulates the disposal of this same equipment.

With the lighting industry in general, both of these regulations aim towards making the sector more environmentally sustainable.

An opportunity for the lighting sector

As a major environmental regulation of electronics, RoHS is step in the right direction to ensure lighting products like fluorescent lamps that are hazardous to humankind and our environment are banned. The question of the sale of fluorescent lighting was never previously under the spotlight due to the lack of the right replacement or alternative.

However, over the years, LED lighting has emerged, with like-for-like replacements that are a cost-effective, mercury-free, sustainable alternative to fluorescents. While the EcoDesign regulation will have removed many conventional lighting products based on their poor energy performance, such as the ban of fluorescent T8s in August 2024, RoHS is poised now to address the products left behind on the basis of their toxicity.

With all these regulations now in place and the sector beginning to comply to these seriously, the sustainable and environmentally friendly future of the sector is here to stay. It would also be equally true to say that the lighting sector is poised to play a significant role in the green recovery of the UK and ensuring it leads by example.

DELIVERING THE LARGEST PREFABRICATED ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION IN EUROPE

We find out how RMS partnered with electrical contractor, LMOB, to meet strict time deadlines for what the company claims to be the largest offsite manufactured electrical and building services solution in Europe.

0 Leadenhall is a £885 million 900,000ft2 office development with some retail and leisure facilities in the City of London. It consists of several stepped blocks that includes two towers, one of which is 34 storeys tall and the other 14 storeys high.

The challenge for the electrical and building services was to find a solution that contractors could install incrementally one floor at a time, while sticking to a strict timetable to keep the project on track.

Due to the scale of the project, LMOB needed to install seven main risers – three in one tower and four in the other. The electrical contractors also needed a cable management solution to run the cabling to services on each floor.

LMOB contacted RMS with a proposed design for the main risers. These would be modular units that interconnect between each floor and need to accommodate a huge amount of services, equipment and cabling. Due to the complexity of constructing such units on site, RMS and LMOB decided that an offsite solution delivered to site incrementally to meet the build schedule was the best option.

RMS decided to prototype a riser module for testing and inspection to prove that the concept would work in practice before committing to manufacturing. Produced in just two days, the team made some minor alterations to this test module before it was signed off.

Pete Willshire, Managing Director of RMS, says, “It is one thing to have a design drawing for a solution, but for large complex projects such as this it really pays to prove that the concept will work in practice. It is better to test a concept than having to alter it on a busy construction site.”

For the main installation, RMS manufactured 460 modular riser units that the contractors installed one unit at a time. Many of these risers had services such as electrical distribution boards installed within them. To achieve this, contractors from LMOB worked on site at the RMS factory in partnership with the company. This ensured that each prefabricated riser module with preinstalled services was quality checked before delivery.

RMS scheduled deliveries with LMOB so that the riser unit modules for each floor plus standard cable tray, trunking and other cable management products all arrived one week in advance as a complete package.

Each riser module connects to the module on the floor above and below it using a flexible link also designed and manufactured by RMS. These all had different heights as the concrete floors between levels have different thicknesses depending on how high each floor is in the building, with lower storeys having thicker floors.

Time saving solution

Richard Pendleton, Operations Director at LMOB, says, “We managed to cut the electrical installation time for each floor down from an expected two to three weeks to just three days. When you are working on large projects like this, and need to co-ordinate different trades, any time savings are a major factor in keeping projects on track.”

Working closely with LMOB, it was also a major logistical exercise for RMS to ensure that the right modules and standard products were all delivered to a central London site on schedule.

Pete continues, “When people talk about offsite construction, they often think of complete rooms or pods that are connected together. Often, however, a manufactured solution removes complexity from the construction site to help save time and ensure a high-quality consistent build for a complex system.

“At RMS we are often involved in projects that combine bespoke design with offsite manufacturing at our factory with standardised cable management systems from our sister company, Armorduct. It is

far from a one size fits all solution. Modern projects demand flexibility to meet the challenges of a construction site and being able to flex to meet different needs is an important requirement from manufacturers.

“Over the years we have learnt that the best results happen when a specifier engages with us at the beginning of a process. In this case LMOB understood what they needed and we provided the design and manufacturing expertise to help them achieve this.”

40 Leadenhall is due for completion towards the end of this year. A major part of keeping the electrical and building services installation on track was due to offsite manufacturing removing complexity from the construction site to cut time on site. With the shortages of skilled labour available it is vital to maximise the resources that you have on site, so the role of offsite manufacturing is set to grow. Watch this space…

THRIVING IN A CHALLENGING AND CHANGING MARKET

Carly Wills speaks to Carl Jones, President Cable Management and Protection (International) at Atkore, about life at the company.

CW: Tell us about yourself and how you got into the sector.

CJ: I’ve been in the sector for around 14 years, and prior to that I was in industrial ceramics. I started off in automotive, working in operations, and became General Manager at the age of 30. I then decided to leave automotive as I wanted to deal more closely with customers, so I moved to a company called Morgan Ceramics. I then wanted to prove to myself that I could replicate my initial success, so I joined Atkore, which had just been formed at the time, and within 12 months I was made Managing Director.

The challenge of dealing with people from different cultures around the world is something I really enjoy about my job. I also take real satisfaction from nurturing talent – it’s helped me become a better leader and allows me more time to focus on strategy and growing the business.

CW: For those who may not know, can you give us an overview of the work that Atkore does?

CJ: We supply a large portfolio of products for the electrical sectors of the construction industry. We do this through electrical wholesale and distribution

outlets across the globe, and we deal directly with end-customers within vertical markets like data centres, semiconductors, electrical infrastructure, and more. We manufacture all of our products and supply to 87 countries.

One of our biggest focuses is renewable energy, which forms a key part of our strategy. For example, all of our new plants use solar panels, we reuse energy within our business, and our sales teams are moving towards electric cars.

CW: Tell us about your current role – what are you responsible for and what does the normal working day consist of?

CJ: It’s certainly not a regular 9-5.30! For example, because of the different time-zones, I could be having a discussion very early in the morning with my New Zealand business, and then a very late call on a Sunday with my Israeli business. Monday mornings are generally the same for me, as they involve looking at all the economic exchanges across the world. I have to convert the currency into dollars and back into local currency and it changes every day, so it’s usually quite hectic!

Apart from that, there’s no typical day –and that’s the most exciting part of the job for me. I relish the way my job constantly poses new challenges.

CW: What are the best things about your role? What are the most challenging?

CJ: The best thing is dealing with the diverse markets and the different customers we have. The biggest challenge is probably the volatility of the world situation these days – by which I mean the many changes happening relating to war, inflation, and economic issues. There’s a real lack of stability in the market now and that’s something that’s challenging but ultimately rewarding when we work together as a team to manage our way through it.

CW: How has COVID-19 affected the industry? What are the positives to come from the pandemic?

CJ: The pandemic was terrible, but in some ways, construction probably benefitted from it. It made the industry stronger because it showed businesses their weaknesses and forced them to look at their processes more. It also proved that you can have people working efficiently from home. However, I do think people need to spend time in the office. The camaraderie and human interaction are things we all benefit from.

CW: Aside from COVID-19, what have been the biggest changes across the industry in recent times? What will be the biggest changes in the future?

CJ: The biggest challenges in the industry right now are ensuring we’re doing everything we can to be sustainable; attracting younger people into the industry and making sure they’re as diverse as possible; and weathering the current economic climate.

CW: What’s next for you and for Atkore?

CJ: Atkore is performing very well and we’ll continue to invest in acquisitions and grow our business from a top line and bottom-line perspective. As part of that, I’ll continue to help us grow into new vertical markets as well as developing the team to make sure we’ve got strong talent coming through. And hopefully we’ll have a bit of fun along the way!

CW: Do you have any career advice for anyone starting out in the industry?

CJ: My advice would be that there’s no rush. Take the time to find what’s right for you by learning different aspects of different positions. Don’t fix yourself

in one position as this can mean you get pigeonholed. Finally, make sure you’re digitally savvy, but remember –relationships are still vital.

CW: What do you think are the most exciting products or technologies coming to the market?

CJ: The market is changing and moving in the direction of prefabrication. This reduces time on site, increases quality levels, and speeds up delivery. An example of this is our new Atkore Unistrut Aisle Containment System, which provides a fast and efficient means to manage heat dissipation. Benefitting from off-site manufacturing, every component part is precision cut and undergoes rigorous quality control to deliver a simple on-site installation.

We’re also going to see a continuation of the trend for new products from new materials. The age of galvanising will fade and new materials will replace it that are aesthetically better, environmentally better, and last longer. Finally, digitisation will continue to grow and infiltrate every area of the industry.

CW: What are your interests away from work?

CJ: Like anyone, there’s a point when I have to release the pressure, and that often means walking the dog on the beach or watching a movie. I’m also in the gym every morning at 6am. It’s always been a hobby of mine, even when travelling. It gives me real peace of mind before my day starts.

The ever-rising cost of energy has become a significant factor in the drive to improve energy efficiency.

Whilst data gathered by the government in England and Wales highlights that since 2005 there has been a downward trend in the usage of gas and electricity in all properties irrespective of their age, present price trends are on a rapid upward curve.

The current prosuming technologies (PV, generators etc.) provide an opportunity to integrate both electricity generation, energy efficiency management systems and energy storage into a prosuming whole enabling a more varied means of supplying

and using electricity. It may transpire that a new Chapter 81 will be introduced into Amendment 3 of BS 7671, whenever that happens in the future.

The introduction of Chapter 82 into Amendment 2 of BS 7671 has provided additional guidance for the integration of energy efficiency/energy management into the operation of electrical installations.

This article very briefly considers some of the guidance provided by the informative Appendix 17 (Energy Efficiency) detailed in BS 7671 and the Harmonised Document published by BSI, Low-voltage electrical installations Part 8-1: Functional aspects –Energy efficiency (IEC 60364-8-1: 2019) and discusses some of the factors that should be taken into account when considering energy efficiency and energy management.

Legislation

In all parts of the UK there are specific requirements detailed in the associated building regulations for energy efficiency. In England, reference should be made to Part L and the associated guidance found in Approved Documents L1 and L2; in Scotland, reference should be made to the Building Regulations Technical Handbooks (domestic and non-domestic).

Reference should always be made to the legislation and guidance issued by the various parts of the government in the UK.

Protective Devices

Our Elucian range of Protective Devices are easy to install, suitable for residential and light commercial environments, they provide protection against earth faults to ensure people’s safety against electrocution and fires. Now including AFDDs.

Jake Green, Scolmore’s Technical Engagement Manager, provides some insight into the integration of electricity generation, energy efficiency management systems and energy storage into a prosuming whole.

It is the case that little thought is given for ‘…optimising the overall efficient use of electricity’ when an electrical installation is being designed. For example, cable sizes are determined based upon the design current of the circuits, the rating of the protective device(s), and various rating factors. The selected cable is designed to limit the rise in temperature during current-carrying conditions to a safe level within the limitations of the cable. Currently there is no regulatory imperative for the designer to take account of any energy efficiency factors.

A proposed Chapter 81 based on the current Harmonised Document (HD) would require the designer to factor into any calculation the efficient use of electrical energy. Clause 17.11 (Appendix 17) suggests that the design of an electrical installation should consider energy efficiency at every stage, including the impact of different load demands, usage etc. One implication of this is that distribution boards will need to enable the segregation of circuits supplying each zone or mesh as defined.

It will be necessary for the user to be able to monitor the electrical installation (clause 17.12) and, therefore, the measurement of total consumption in kWh for every hour of each day should be logged and stored for a minimum of one year and be accessible to the user.

However, a simplistic approach to energy efficiency might fail to consider, for example, embodied energy – that is the ‘unconsidered’ energy demands in the production of more/larger boards/cables and the like. The designer should not, therefore, simply increase cable sizes to limit voltage drop, or create meshes and zones thinking that these alone will necessarily reduce energy usage.

Design considerations

When considering the availability of electrical energy, the designer and user will have to consider, as a minimum, the following (clause 17.2):

• Selection of energy efficient appliances

• Assignment of load priority for use as an input of the load optimisation process –including any load shedding

• The intended use of the installation in providing an energy efficient design, and

• The provision of a manual override facility, enabling the user to take control from any automatic functions

The design requirements detailed in clause 17.3 are:

• Load energy profile

• Availability of local generation, such as PV, wind, generator and the like

• Reduction of energy losses in the electrical installation

• The tariff structure

• Arrangement of circuits

• The nature of the customer demand

For the design of any energy management system the user specification is critical and to that end, prior consultations must be made to ensure that the energy efficiency management system (EEMS) is correctly set up. IP RATINGS EXPLAINED

To inform users of how safe electrical devices are, IP ratings were developed. They are given to an electrical device, according to their enclosures and the environmental conditions where they are designed to be used. IP ratings indicate the protection level an enclosure gives the device against foreign bodies, such as dust, liquids, accidental contact, and moisture.

IP stands for Ingress Protection. To help avoid accidents and damage to electrical devices, the integrity of enclosures needs to be IP compliant.

IP ratings are defined by the international standard BS EN 60529: 1992. The rating system was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and it was released in 1976.

What are the two digits in an IP rating?

Whether in the home or a working environment, electrical devices need to have an IP rating to classify the degree of protection their enclosures give them, i.e. the effectiveness of sealing the device to protect against foreign bodies.

IP ratings consist of two digits. The first number indicates the level of protection an electrical enclosure gives against solids. The second number indicates the level of protection against liquids. The higher the number, the greater the protection level.

IP ratings explained

The first number in an IP rating can range from 0 to 6, whereas the second number can range from 0 to 8. The levels of protection are determined as follows:

The first number: protection against solids

0 – The device has no protection from foreign bodies.

1 – The device is protected against solid objects greater than 50mm, such as accidental touch by hands.

2 – The device is protected against solid objects up to 12mm. For example, it is protected against fingers.

3 – The device is protected against solid objects greater than 2.5mm, such as tools and wires.

4 – The device is protected against solid objects greater than 1mm.

5 – The device has limited protection against small amounts of dust.

The second number: protection against liquids

0 – The device has no protection from liquids.

1 – The device is protected against drops of water. For example, it is protected against condensation.

2 – The device is protected against direct vertical sprays of water with the enclosure tilted up to 15 degrees.

3 – The device is protected against direct vertical sprays of water with the enclosure tilted up to 60 degrees.

4 – The device is protected against water sprayed from all directions.

5 – The device is protected against low-pressure jets of water from all directions.

6 – The device is protected against high-pressure jets of water. For example, this can be found on devices on ship decks.

7 – The device is protected against the effects of immersion between 15cm and 1m.

8 – The device is protected against long periods of immersion and pressure.

What is an IPX rating?

As previously mentioned, IP ratings are given to certain devices to indicate how resistant they are against dust, water, and other elements. If there is an X in the rating, this could indicate that the electrical device is not resistant to liquids/solids. The rating is determined by accounting for the environmental conditions in which the device is intended.

However, if a device has an X in the IP rating, this could also indicate that there is no data available for the electrical device. For example, an electrical device marked IP2X is protected against solid objects to a certain degree, but it is not protected against liquids, or there is no data to support that it is protected against liquids.

Which IP rating is waterproof?

The term ‘waterproof’ will depend on the environment and conditions around the electrical appliance. With this in mind, electrical devices that have an IP rating that includes a higher second number, such as IP65, 66, 67, and 68, are considered to be water resistant or even waterproof up to a certain point.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SURGE PROTECTION FOR SOLAR SYSTEMS

Today, the primary objective when it comes to generating power is sustainability. As a result, corporations, governments, and individuals are investing in renewable energy products to gradually shift from electricity generated by fossil fuels to be more energy-efficient, especially with climate change looming around the corner.

Some solar PV systems might withstand physical or circuit damage to their panels, however, their circuit controls and energy storage devices will be instantly unusable after a lightning strike.

HEATING AT HEIGHT: WHY INFRARED HEATING MAKES COST AND CARBON SENSE FOR TOWER BLOCKS

As with many property types in the UK, tower blocks have seen a major rise in the cost of energy over the past 18 months. This is largely due to the fact that most of these high-rise, multi-occupancy buildings use uncontrollable electric storage heaters, which are expensive to run and don’t provide sufficient temperature control.

In addition, in many cases, residents are unprotected by the government’s price cap and are unable to switch energy suppliers.

As a result, local authorities, housing associations, landlords and contractors are considering new ways to help residents –particularly those who are vulnerable to fuel poverty – to reduce bills, while also reducing carbon emissions.

At the heart of the challenge is heating – how to replace often decades-old systems with an affordable low carbon technology that keeps residents out of fuel poverty. Conventional electric heating systems don’t address the high cost of energy, while convection systems – including heat pumps – are not as effective in combating mould and damp issues. In addition, lack of space for a large system means some technologies are both cost and convenience prohibitive. So, what is the solution?

The smaller property challenge

With the government’s net zero plans focusing on electrification for heating homes, many properties are turning to heat pumps. However, this technology is often unsuitable for smaller homes and multi-occupancy buildings. With a high upfront cost and a lengthy, complicated and often disruptive installation process, these systems require space that is often not available in properties of this size. Requiring pipework, radiators and external condenser units, heat pumps can also be costly to service and maintain.

In addition, convection systems, including heat pumps, don’t help combat the mould and damp that tower blocks are prone to. In fact, the warm air they produce, when coming into contact with cold walls, can cause further mould and condensation and harm residents’ wellbeing.

With traditional systems failing to ensure the whole home is adequately and efficiently heated, and options like heat pumps considered unsuitable or impractical for tower blocks, electrical contractors are looking for alternative heating solutions –enter infrared heating panels.

A future-proof solution

Low carbon heat panels can be fitted in a new home or building, or retro-fitted to replace an existing gas or electric heating system using mains wiring.

The technology has a unique control system which uses constant dynamic pulsing – rather than a ‘zoning’ on/off approach used by other systems – to dramatically reduce energy usage and maintain a room’s temperature within 0.1°C of its target, 24 hours a day.

Discreet infrared heat panels are then used because building materials absorb and store infrared, releasing it between pulses, making it the perfect partner for the pulsing approach.

The results of using dynamic pulsing plus the infrared panels are significant –users can expect to use 63% less electricity when compared to conventional systems, which also equates to a 63% reduction in carbon emissions.

The system also reduces the unit cost of electricity because it works best across 24-hours. This flat demand profile – there are no morning or evening energy spikes in usage – means that if a homeowner is on a flexi tariff, the system can achieve around a 25% saving in the unit cost of their energy.

Low carbon and low cost

Low carbon heat panels can also reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% in flats when compared with conventional heating systems, and are fully future-proofed to partner with solar and battery solutions.

Running costs are also slashed by 80% in these properties when compared to traditional heating systems, safeguarding residents from fuel poverty.

Some buildings and residents are already seeing the positive effects of using low carbon heat panels. For example, in an eight-storey social housing block from 1956, which contains 47 dwellings, the switch to Ambion’s solution saw energy usage drop by 80%, energy costs fall by 74%, and carbon emissions cut by 80%.

Meeting the 2050 net zero challenge

Living in a warm and safe environment is critical to our health and wellbeing. Britain’s tower blocks often get bad press, but there’s an incredible opportunity to intelligently renovate this housing stock and extend the life of these buildings as warm, comfortable and low carbon homes.

BAXI HYDROGEN BOILERS TO BE USED IN WORLD-FIRST PROJECT

Baxi will be supplying its 100% hydrogen boilers for the H100 Fife Project, a world-first hydrogen-to-homes demonstration delivered through a partnership between gas distribution company SGN and Fife Council, in cooperation with industry regulator, Ofgem.

Baxi attended an event hosted by SGN in March to mark the beginning of construction of the H100 Fife hydrogen homes demonstration facility. Due to open to the public this summer, the new facility will comprise two hydrogen show homes where visitors will be able to try out domestic hydrogen appliances, including Baxi’s 100% pure hydrogen boilers.

The H100 Fife project enables households in the Buckhaven and Denbeath areas of historic Methil on the south Fife coast, to opt-in to be supplied with hydrogen through a new network which is due to go live in 2024.

The scheme has already signed up over 300 householders who want to be part of the first 100% green hydrogen-tohomes zero carbon network anywhere in the world. Their participation will provide important behavioural and social evidence, critical to help the UK decarbonise home heating. Green hydrogen will be supplied via the dedicated ORE Catapult 7MW wind turbine connected to an on-site electrolyser and storage facility. Modelling shows that the turbine could provide the energy to produce enough hydrogen for up to 900 homes a year.

The H100 Fife Project is the latest in a line of hydrogen projects to benefit from Baxi’s involvement, with the heating specialist having already supplied its full hydrogen and 20% blend compatible boilers to residential projects such as HyDeploy, Hy4Heat, HyStreet, Northern Gas Network’s 100% Hydrogen Home near Gateshead.

In the commercial heating space, Baxi also recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with H2GO Power to deliver the world-first commercial hydrogen boiler and demonstrate the technology’s potential to decarbonise multiple industries.

DIN rail and panel mounted time switches

Other options include DIN rail and panel mounted digital time switches that include Near Field Communication (NFC) capability. NFC is a low powered wireless communication technology that allows devices to exchange information from just a few centimetres away. Using the free Sangamo Connect app on an Android NFC enabled smartphone allows you to upload a created programming schedule, download an existing schedule to store or amend, as well as transfer programmes from one switch to another. This enhanced capability makes this form of time switch so much easier to program and has been exceedingly well received by the industry. Another strong feature of the NFC range of timers is that they will switch up to 600W of LED lighting.

The range also includes Astro Switches, also known as solar switches, which automatically adjust the on and off times to match sunset and sunrise times. A selection of Standard Switches completes the range. These are often used to control heating, ventilation and door entry systems.

ELECTRIC IS THE FUTURE-PROOF OPTION FOR SUSTAINABLE HEATING IN UK BUILDINGS

To decarbonise and reduce emissions, large swathes of the UK economy are becoming electrified. So far, the results have been positive. But to achieve the UK’s 2050 net zero obligation, further electrification is needed, especially in commercial and domestic buildings. According to the Climate Change Committee (CCC) parliamentary report, half of our heat demand must transition to low carbon by 2035 to reach the 2050 target.

The squeeze on other forms of heating is already here too. The 2025 Future Homes Standard will effectively shut out gas boilers from new homes, making low carbon electric heating one of a few options for contractors and installers.

These are not the only significant changes that installers and contractors will soon face. Electric market reforms, changes to the energy mix, and large-scale adoption of national grid flexibility technologies are soon coming. Low carbon electric heating is a future-proof option.

The UK’s electricity supply is becoming greener by the year. In 2022, 40% of electricity was produced from renewable sources. And in May 2022, 73% of the grid’s power came from renewables. This means the overall share of electric energy in the UK is becoming greener. As this trend continues, commercial and residential heating installers must be prepared to adopt more sustainable heating solutions.

This isn’t the only change driving the transition to low carbon electric heating methods. In 2022, the UK government concluded its Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA). The review, touted as the ‘biggest electricity market reform in a generation’, will enhance energy security and cut electricity costs.

A transformative outcome of the review will be the decoupling of the gas and electricity markets. Currently, the highest gas prices the wholesale price of electricity, which pushes higher electricity prices, including renewable electricity, which should be significantly cheaper.

When the decoupling reforms come in to play, the price of residential and commercial electricity should drop significantly, especially as the renewables mix continues to increase past 40%. This would make electrical heating one of the least carbon intensive forms of heating, as well as the least expensive. Rather than replacing outdated forms of heating down the line, installers should make the most of this by deploying electrical heating now as the future-proof choice.

Heat pumps and direct electric are the two most popular forms of low carbon electric heating, and the UK’s varied building stock requires contracting teams to use both. New homes built after

2025 and spacious, two-storey buildings are suitable for heat pump installation. However, much of the UK’s building stock is made up of smaller, older, and multi-storey buildings where heat pump installation is not practical.

As commercial buildings are transformed into residential apartments in the wake of the shift to hybrid work, retrofitting increasingly involves smaller heating solutions for multi-storey properties. Research carried out by electrical heating specialist, ThermoSphere, shows that 54% of construction professionals reported that the best low carbon heating solution for smaller homes, flats, and multi-storey buildings is direct electric heating because of its size and lack of the need for external hardware for installation.

The REMA reforms will also lead to ‘increases [in] the participation of low carbon flexibility technologies’, including more electricity storage and wider use of demand side response (DSR). UK homes have recently experienced this with the limited roll out of the National Grid ESO Demand Flexibility Scheme, a residential DSR technology which ended in March 2023. As demand side activity increases, giving domestic and commercial properties the ability to receive financial rewards

for temporarily reducing their electricity consumption, organisations with buildings that have low carbon electric heating have the potential to receive the most benefit, as they have the most capacity to shut down.

In addition, direct electric heating can manage DSR shutdowns with greater control as it doesn’t operate on a central heating system, unlike gas or air-to-water or ground-source heat pumps. Installing direct electric heating enables contractors to create options for zone-specific heating and shutdowns. When shutting down is needed, buildings with direct electric heating can choose to turn off specific areas and keep others heated. What’s more, with new underfloor heating products, on average it only takes approximately 20-30 minutes to heat a room, meaning temperature and comfort levels can be quickly restored after a shut off.

The UK is set for more changes as it electrifies further. Contactors and installers aiming to ensure their solutions can outlive these changes must adopt electric heating methods, says ThermoSphere. Market reforms, the shift to renewables, and greater grid flexibility make direct electric heating a necessity for parts of the UK building stock.

NEW DATA REVEALS THAT TOOL THIEVES ARE RARELY CHARGED

Metropolitan Police data has revealed that 34,712 tools were stolen in London from 2021

to 2022

compared to 21,445 tools from 2019 to 2020. While as many as four in five tradespeople have experienced tool theft, just 0.3% of all cases (three cases per 1,000) ended in a charge for the suspect.

In over 86% of the tool thefts reported between 2021 and 2022, a suspect was never identified. In addition, there were three times as many cases where a suspect was known but not charged than there were charges.

The Tool Theft in London 2022 report, collated by London telehandler hire specialist, Herts Tools, comes from a freedom of information request to the Metropolitan Police. The data reveals the impact of tool theft in London, the most affected industries, and the types of tools that are targeted most often.

While tool theft from a vehicle has increased by 25% in the last year –accounting for a third of all tool thefts recorded in 2021 and 2022 – a suspect is 20 times less likely to be charged for tool theft from a vehicle than they are for any other theft category.

Stefano Lobban, Director at Herts Tools, says, “It’s disappointing to see that the tool theft epidemic is getting worse in London.

“It’s not surprising to see that high-price items such as powered hand tools are still the most sought-after by thieves. Amid the ongoing cost-of-living-crisis, the trade for secondhand (and potentially stolen) tools is booming, tempting more people into stealing tools.

“We’re urging those across all trades to double-check they have theft security measures in place, to avoid falling victim to crime.”

Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the Federation of Master Builders, says, “With eight in 10 builders reporting that they have had tools stolen before, tool theft is a serious issue for Britain’s tradespeople.

It’s a shame that over a 40-year working life, tradespeople will typically lose £10,000 and six working days to tool theft. Aside from the detrimental financial impact, tool theft causes mental health issues and stress.

“Builders can protect themselves by bringing tools inside at night, adding extra locks to their van and marking tools. Installing an affordable CCTV system is a further option, as well as registering tool serial numbers on an online database. They should also check their insurance policies to see what they have covered.”

How can you recover your stolen tools?

• Report your tools as stolen, calling the police on 101 immediately

• Find serial numbers, makes and models for your tools

• Retrieve photographs of your tools

• Make an insurance claim, giving your provider an itemised list of missing items

• Use tracking devices to locate your tools, informing police where you suspect they are, rather than retrieving them yourself

• Visit local pawn shops to search for the items, as well as online marketplaces like eBay

• Join trade groups on social media, detailing the missing items – somebody else might find them.

artindale Electric has introduced its new BZ701 Socket Tester and Supply Polarity Tester, which is claimed to offer advanced 13A socket testing capability in a wide variety of domestic, commercial and industrial applications.

The new Martindale BZ701 unit not only detects 28 different socket wiring fault conditions and checks the mains voltage level, but it also safely identifies Line-Neutral reversal or cross polarity at the incoming supply. The polarity swap test detects fault conditions on PME/ TN-C-S systems (the most common type of supply) that cannot be identified by normal socket testers.

The BZ701 is user-friendly – simply plug it in and activate it with the touchpad. Correct polarity is indicated by three flashing green LEDs, while a fault condition is immediately highlighted by three red LEDs and a warning buzzer.

Safety gloves

STALSEN has launched new safety gloves – 21-gauge cut resistant gloves, the Rayza RX562 and the Rayza RX563. They are claimed to be the thinnest gloves with maximum cut protection (level F).

Designed for even the fiddliest of tasks, this range is perfect for where manual precision and touch sensitivity are required. An additional benefit is the touchscreen compatibility, meaning smart devices can be operated while keeping gloves on hands, and keeping hands safe.

21-gauge is brand-new technology, enabling STALSEN to develop gloves that are said to be over 16% thinner than the current ‘thinnest 18-gauge’, and 40% thinner than the standard ‘thin 15-gauge’.

MFlexible worklamps

Ring has introduced three new worklamps that deliver on providing lighting solutions for all professions. All three worklamps are lightweight, durable and flexible, so the user can use their light with confidence and focus on the job at hand.

The RWL400 is a battery operated worklamp that has a dual light head and two handles that can be altered to be freestanding at multiple different angles, allowing for full flexibility. The RWL400 is 400lm and has 16 hours of operating time.

The RWL600 and RWL1000 are both rechargeable via USB-C and have handles attached, so that the light can be hung or be freestanding, ensuring that it is completely adaptable for the user. The RWL600 is 600lm and has an operating time of six and a half hours, with two and a half hours recharging time, whereas the RWL1000 has 1,000lm, an eight-hour operating time and takes four hours to recharge.

Safety glasses

Carhartt has developed a range of lightweight but tough and highly protective safety glasses, including a new half-frame ratcheting temple design.

The Carhartt range of safety glasses all meet EN 166, the European Standard covering the requirements for protective eyewear. The MFT-X1, designed by Megger, is a multifunction tester that is intended to make electrical safety testing easier and more reliable. Its suitability for testing electrical appliances such as electric vehicle charging stations is just one example of the product’s versatility. Quick and reliable readings, as well as keeping plant downtime to the minimum, give companies a significant competitive edge by helping them save time and money.

For an electrician, possibly the biggest investment will be your van lease, so it’s vital to make the right choice. You need one the right size, for it to be economical to run, and you might have decided that now is the time to move to an electric van now that payloads and ranges have drastically improved.

You’re going to want one that is comfortable to drive, and you might even want to consider a dual purpose crew van – this will offer an additional row of passenger seats, allowing you to take the family out at the weekend, while keeping a decent-sized load area for the weekday job.

Most people who own a commercial van would agree that they are one of their most valuable commodities. Not only do they allow you to get from one job to another, but they also carry your much-needed tools and equipment.

Given their value, it’s no surprise then that van theft is becoming a worryingly common theme. In fact, according to the Office for National Statistics, van theft is on the rise, with more than 12,000 reported incidents in 2020, a 5% rise on the previous year.

Additionally, a study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles revealed that the average value of equipment stored per van stands at £2,500, which means UK tradespeople are footing a £4.4 billion bill for replacement tools every year. These statistics further highlight the need to take precautions to protect your van from opportunistic thieves.

Install an alarm system

Vehicle alarms can be effective in preventing vehicle theft, however, the quality and type of alarm system installed can have a significant impact on its effectiveness. Carl Kammerling International (CKI) has purchased the Clipacore brand, a tool system designed to eradicate a common and dangerous problem for users of core drills.

Clipacore is a clip release system which allows users to change and remove core bits from drills quickly and effortlessly. Dismantling a core drill after use often requires physical strength and brute force, as torque tension locks components together.

The other issue with core drilling is waste concrete becoming wedged in the tool, another problem which has been solved with the Clipacore system.
